A once vaunted New York Giants defensive line has looked very ordinary throughout the first two weeks of the 2013 regular season. Big Blue's defensive front will need to rediscover its swagger if it hopes to avoid a third consecutive loss on Sunday to the Carolina Panthers.

The New York Giants have been a turnover machine in the early stages of the regular season; committing nine giveaways in just two games. With a zero tolerance policy for costly mistakes, head coach Tom Coughlin is imploring his group to stop shooting themselves in the foot.

”We’ve got to stop hurting ourselves,” urged Coughlin. “We’ve got to play as one. And yes we do have to be focused and in tune on the sidelines and engaged on the sidelines and supportive of each other throughout the full four quarters.”

Besides Eli Manning’s six interceptions the past two weeks, New York’s defensive line hasn’t exactly wreaked havoc on opposing quarterbacks; tallying just two sacks in the season opener and barely touching Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning last Sunday. With star defensive ends Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck yet to make a major impact on the field, Coughlin expressed his displeasure with his group’s pass-rushing effort.

“No of course not,” said Coughlin on his level of satisfaction with getting to the quarterback. “How could it be? We didn’t sack the guy the other day. We’re better than that. And when we do get there we’ve got to get him in our grasp. We had him two or three times, that day when we had the quarterback in our grasp and we didn’t get it done.”

It’s not all gloom and doom for Big Blue as Coughlin told reporters Wednesday that a lot of the errors the team is making are correctable and most of the wounds self-inflicted.

“Yeah, sure you can,” said Coughlin of rectifying miscues. “We can fix a lot by hanging onto the ball. A lot of what we can accomplish for ourselves would be to take better care of the ball.”
