Drafting The Denver Broncos Draft

Posted Apr 25, 2005

Analysis: The Broncos went into the draft looking to secure its defensive backfield with their first selection, so Williams is a solid fit.

Denver Broncos
2 (56) Darrent Williams; CB - Oklahoma State
3 (76) Karl Paymah; CB - Washington State
3 (97) Domonique Foxworth; CB - Maryland
3 (101) Maurice Clarett; RB - Ohio State
6 (200) Chris Myers; OG - Miami (Fl)
7 (239) Paul Ernster; K - Northern Arizona

Analysis: The Broncos went into the draft looking to secure its defensive backfield with their first selection, so Williams is a solid fit. He is close to being a cover-type cornerback and should play an immediate role in the Denver defensive backfield and compete with Lenny Walls for the starting spot opposite Champ Bailey.

Paymah is another cornerback who could surprise at the professional level. Quick and smooth when the play is in front of him, Paymah has shown the tendency to be turned around in coverage. He shouldn’t be considered a starting cornerback candidate at this early time, especially with the acquisition of Williams, but is a solid depth move for the Broncos.

The selection of Clarett comes as a surprise, but the Broncos have had success with choosing backs over the years. Clarett comes with a significant amount of baggage and talent.
