Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in downtown Denver early this morning, victim of a drive-by-shooting.

Tragedy struck in Denver early this morning as Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive by shooting in downtown Denver.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano was informed of the shooting around 3:00 am, and then notified head coach Mike Shanahan and others within the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said that a little after 2 a.m., William and two others were traveling in a white Hummer limousine near Speer and 11th Street in Denver. when a vehicle pulled along side and began spraying the limo with bullets. All three people inside the limousine were hit and were taken to area hospitals, where Williams was pronounced dead.

Authorities say that prior to the shooting Williams, Javon Walker and a few other players were at a club when an alteration broke out with other patrons inside the bar. Williams and his friends decided to leave and the shooting took place moments later.

Williams' mother is currently flying in from Dallas and will join her son's teammates and coaches at the Denver Coroner's office to identify her son.

Police are currently interviewing suspects but no arrests have been made at this point.

“All of us are devastated by this tragedy. To lose a young player, and more important, a great young man such as Darrent Williams, is incomprehensible. To lose him in such a senseless manner as this is beyond words. My deepest feelings, all my thoughts and prayers, go out to Darrent’s mother and family. The entire Broncos’ organization shares my grief. Darrent was a wonderful young man, and his passing is a great loss for his family, the Broncos and the city.”

“Losing a fine young man such as Darrent Williams leaves me speechless with sadness. We all know that Darrent was an excellent player, but as a person, he was a first class young man who brightened every room with his smile, attitude and personality. I cannot express how heartsick I feel at this loss. All of our players and coaches are completely shocked by this terrible tragedy, and my deepest condolences go out to the entire Williams family.”
