Denver Broncos safety John Lynch comes to terms on a one-year deal, which will keep the fifteen-year veteran in Denver for the 2008 season.

In a profession that’s generally ‘all about the money’, Broncos safety John Lynch decided money took a backseat when it came to family, and the fifteen-year veteran came to terms on a restructured deal, significantly below the $2 million in base salary and $1.12 million roster bonus he was due this week, so he and his family could remain in Denver.

"I could probably go make more money elsewhere in the free agent market," Lynch told local reporters, “But my family is happy, I’ve got four kids in schools and it’s been a great move for us, the organization has been good to me.”

It was a decision that almost didn’t happen. Shortly after Lynch was informed of the impending pay cut, he came to the conclusion it was time to move on and placed a call to owner Pat Bowlen on Thursday evening, to thank him for the four-years spent in Denver.

Fortunately for the Broncos, Bowlen was out for dinner the call went unanswered.

By the next morning, things had changed significantly and issues of family and loyalty came into play. Friday afternoon the two sides resumed negotiations and by early evening a deal was struck for Lynch to play one more season for an organization and head coach he felt comfortable with.

"I woke up thinking, 'What am I doing?' I've got four kids who are happy here. I've found a home here and I didn't want to be one of those guys going from team to team. Sometimes you have to step back and look at the big picture, and the big picture to me was I had to find a way to make this work."

“I’m happy it worked out.”
