Broncos Add Three Assistant Coaches
Spencer, 33, will assist defensive backs coach David Gibbs. He has played 11 seasons in the NFL, including the past three with the Broncos. In 161 career games (79 starts) with the Saints (1992-95), Bengals (1996-97), Chargers (1998-99) and Broncos he has 26 interceptions and 123 passes defensed, to go along with 435 tackles (377) solo. Spencer has returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns-both in 2000 with Denver-and has returned a fumble for a touchdown. He entered the NFL as an eighth-round draft choice (215th overall) of the Redskins in 1991, out of Florida, and spent that season on Washington's practice squad.
Calhoun, 36, comes to Denver after a successful two-year stint (2001-02) as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Wake Forest. Prior to that, he was the quarterbacks coach at Ohio University in 1994-95, and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1996 before moving to Wake Forest. A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, Calhoun began his coaching career in 1989 as a graduate assistant. After serving four years as an Air Force officer, he returned to his alma mater as the recruiting coordinator and the junior varsity offensive coordinator from 1993-94. He was the starting quarterback for the Falcons and was a Western Athletic Conference all-academic selection.
Bradford, 32, begins his coaching career after retiring from the National Football League this offseason. As the assistant special teams coach, he will assist Frank Bush with all facets of the Broncos special teams. An 11-year NFL defensive back, Bradford finished his playing career with the Minnesota Vikings. Prior to that, he spent five years (1997-2001) with the Atlanta Falcons, and one with the Arizona Cardinals (1996). Originally selected by Miami in the fourth round (105th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft before being released in training camp, Bradford spent his first three seasons with the Broncos (1993-95).
